The importance of Wi-Fi signal

Performance for Wi-Fi-enabled devices like smart phones, tablets and computers can be greatly improved with a strong Wi-Fi signal.   You should pay careful attention to the number of bars displayed on your Wi-Fi device according to the guidelines provided below. To improve the Wi-Fi signal please refer to our article on ideal modem location.

1. Excellent (> -50 dBm)

2. Good (-50 to -60 dBm)

3. Fair (-60 to -70 dBm)

4. Weak (< -70 dBm)

  • A minimum of -67dBm is the National Standard to provide to a wireless device in order to experience proper product functionality.
  • Signals operating with a signal weaker than -67dBm may still work up to -85dBm, but manufacturers cannot guarantee proper functionality with that signal. Slow speeds and network timeouts are common for any device not within specifications.

Wi-Fi obstacles

When placing your Internet modem, consider the impact of these physical barriers that could impact your Wi-Fi signal strength.
