Tips to Optimize Your Home Wi-Fi

There are several factors that can affect your Wi-Fi speed and strength. Here are a few suggestions to improve the performance of your home Wi-Fi:

Modem or router tips

  • If possible, place your modem near to where you need Wi-Fi most often.
  • Be sure your modem has space around it and isn’t in a closet or closed cabinet. It should also not be too close to walls (especially walls shared with neighbours) or major appliances including furnaces.
  • If you are experiencing slower speeds on several devices, turn off and restart your modem. Rebooting your modem can re-establish a stronger Wi-Fi signal.

Device tips

  • Your Wi-Fi speed is shared by all connected devices in your home. Consider taking devices offline when not in use.
  • If you are experiencing slower speeds on a specific device, restart your device. This will ensure that all applications not in use are closed. It will also re-establish the connection to your Wi-Fi. If given the option between connecting on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, try both to see which performs best for this device.
  • Confirm that your operating system is up to date. System enhancements can improve speed performance.

Running a speed test can help you diagnose a slow speed vs a Wi-Fi issue. Learn how to run a speed test here.

Wi-Fi signal performance parameters

  • A minimum of -67dBm is the National Standard to provide to a wireless device in order to experience proper product functionality.
  • Signals operating with a signal weaker than -67dBm may still work up to -85dBm, but manufacturers cannot guarantee proper functionality with that signal. Slow speeds and network timeouts are common for any device not within specifications.
  • The following chart refers to each Wi-Fi bars status and what it represents in signal strength for any connected device:

1. Excellent (> -50 dBm)

2. Good (-50 to -60 dBm)

3. Fair (-60 to -70 dBm)

4. Weak (< -70 dBm)
